Task 2: A Personal Experience (60 seconds)
Question: Describe a trip you recall. Why was it memorable?
Answer Example: “My first solo backpacking experience in Southeast Asia was memorable for the self-discovery and liberty. Toughening up was learning about new cultures in Vietnam, from haggling for food to trekking and hiking. It wasn’t all sightseeing; it was learning about me.”
Why it’s Band 9: It answers both parts, uses descriptive words, and provides clear examples.
Task 3: Discussing a Destination (60 seconds)
Question: Explain a picture in great detail.
This is an image of a very busy open-air market. In the background, a woman is arranging some colorful fruits and vegetables. Individuals are utilizing the thin pathway in the middle. The awnings of the vendors offer some cover. There are some old buildings in the background. This is a busy city area.
Why it’s Band 9: Systematic description, vocabulary rich, inferences, smooth transitions.
Task 4: Making Predictions (60 seconds)
Question: What do you anticipate occurring next in this photo (scene)?
A young boy playing does not notice the toy car in front of him. He might trip and fall slightly, and then start crying. A carer will help him, and because of this, the child will learn and continue to play.
Why it’s Band 9: Clear specific predictions with explanation, use of modals to indicate probability, detailed descriptions of results.
Task 5: Comparing and Convincing (60 seconds)
Question: Choose a beach resort or a mountain cabin for a family holiday. Try to persuade your family member in the best possible way.
“Hi, Mom. I think the mountain cabin is the better option this time. The beach is peaceful, but the cabin is fun and natural. Consider walking and seeing the stars. The children will love discovering, with the possibility of logging off from devices. It is also cheaper. The beach will probably be crowded, but the cabin is a more rewarding experience.”
Why it’s Band 9: It explicitly indicates a preference, makes effective comparisons, employs convincing reasons, and addresses the listener.
Task 6: Solving a Problem (60 seconds)
Question: Your order is not right. Get the manager and leave a message.
“Hello, it is Mark. I am calling regarding my grilled salmon for tonight. I requested that it be well cooked, but it was not. Errors are possible, but I was unable to consume it. My number is 9999999999. I would appreciate it if this could be rectified. Thank you.”
Why it’s Band 9: It is formal and polite. It clearly explains the problem, points out a mistake, and gives useful information.
Task 7: Sharing Opinions (90 seconds)
Question: Should children learn a second language at a young age? Why?.
It is helpful for children to learn a second language early. Firstly, it improves their brain and imagination. Children acquire new languages easily. Secondly, it allows them to learn other cultures, which is beneficial in the globalized world today. Thirdly, it provides them with more educational and career opportunities. Some will say it is too difficult, but the future benefit is immense. It is an investment in their whole life.
Why it’s Band 9: Strong position, good reasons, makes use of transition words, discusses counter-argument.
Task 8: Describe an unexpected event (60 seconds)
Question: Something unexpected happens, and you notice it. Inform your co-worker about this event.
Answer: Hello Mark, you won’t believe this! In the park, a tabby cat and a golden retriever are playing a game of chess at a little table. The cat even wears a monocle – it is absolutely ridiculous. They are playing with their paws – it is absolutely surreal and ridiculous! I am absolutely stunned; it is the most surreal and ridiculous thing I have ever witnessed!
Why it’s Band 9: Extremely visually descriptive, engaging, maintains the reader’s interest, produces powerful mental pictures.
Important Points for a Band 9:
Fluency is important: Talk clearly, with pauses. Word counts: Employ several, suitable words. Intonation and Pronunciation: Speak with clear voice, proper stress and rhythm. Define concepts clearly: Employ examples in the form of illustrations. Address all points of the prompt: Be comprehensive and pertinent. Take this opportunity. You must keep practicing; the more you practice, the more confident you will become. With these methods, you should be able to achieve this Band 9 in CELPIP speaking.
